SEEKING DONATIONS: MUNISING HIGH SCHOOL ADVANCES 3 STUDENTS TO FORENSICS STATE FINALS.
On April 28, Munising’s team will collaborate with Westwood High School to send the students on a charter bus to compete in the MIFA State Finals sponsored event. Munising has qualified at least one student to participate in the BCD Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association statewide event for at least two decades or more.
Fortunately, this year’s event will be in person instead of via zoom meetings. Unfortunately, due to the expense of hotels, judging, transportation and participation, the team’s past fundraising will be largely depleted.
Students will have a very lengthy Saturday, April 29 of competition, anywhere from 8-12 hours for the 12 different categories, initial rounds, semi-finals, and final rounds. Friday will be used for practice, and Sunday for an early afternoon return.
Forensics provides students the opportunity to represent the Munising Public School District at the state level. These Mustangs will travel to Troy High School to face hundreds of contestants at levels B, C, and D levels–all at the same time. Class A will have its own separate tournament. Forensics competitors specialize in public speaking using evidence, show huge confidence and problem solving, and two of the three competitors were ranked in the top 10 in the state last year.
Munising will be hosting a public viewing of our state finalists at the high school around noon on Friday, April 22. If you are interested in viewing the performances or helping to sponsor a student, please contact Coach Heather Nayback.
The estimated meal costs for this trip are at least $300 per student, excluding the coach. We are asking for community support to help give our students a great opportunity to showcase our public speaking skills and theatrical talent. Any donations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your continued support of the Munising Community!
Donations may be made by check (preferred) or cash. Please make checks payable to "Munising High School" and write "Forensics State Finals" in the check memo line. Checks or cash may be dropped off in the office or mailed to:
Munising Middle-High School
810 State Hwy. M-28 West
Munising, MI 49862
Please direct questions to Heather Nayback at heather.nayback@mps-up.com or at her personal cell at 906 202 9098 and leave a voicemail or text message.

Due to a significant decrease in positive COVID cases throughout the school district, Munising Public Schools is removing its universal masking requirement effective immediately. Masks will no longer be required in school or at school events. Masks will still be required on school buses and other school transportation, per a federal Transportation Security Administration order.
We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we continue to work together to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our students.

BASKETBALL GAMES, PARENT NIGHT, AND ALL AFTER SCHOOL PRACTICES AND EVENTS ARE CANCELED TONIGHT (FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11TH) DUE TO WINTER STORM CONDITIONS:
The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry. Due to the Winter Storm Warning which will be in effect beginning at 1:00pm our JV/Varsity Quadruple Header games with NCA are canceled as well as the related Parent Night recognitions.
In communicating with the coaches and administrators at NCA we will NOT attempt to reschedule the JV/Varsity Girls games. Their girls teams are struggling with low numbers due injury and illness, etc. We WILL reschedule the boys games. We have set the date of Thursday, March 3rd as the makeup date to host the JV/Varsity Boys games vs. NCA. The JV will tip at 6:00pm EST and the Varsity at 7:30pm EST.
We will work with the coaches and Sports Boosters to reschedule our Parent Night recognitions. That information will be shared in the near future.

MUNISING HIGH SCHOOL KIWANIS KEY CLUB:
This great group of young adults are “difference makers” in their community. Adviser, Mr. Eric Lynch poses with a Mustang Herd of community servants. In addition to hosting the Children’s Community Christmas Party in December and the Winter HOP Dance last month, this group of over two dozen has collectively logged over 400 hours of volunteer service in the community. Go Kiwanis and Go Stangs!

MUSTANG FOCUS ON THE ARTS
Mrs. Sontag does an amazing job as a K-12 art teacher. The art projects across the grade levels connect to many different curriculum areas. She meaningfully integrates math, science, social studies, and literacy into the learning activities for art. Parents are encouraged to take a walk around the school (on both levels) to see the proudly displayed student artwork. One of the most recent 6th grade projects (Copper Masks of West Africa) has learning connections in science (metallurgy) and social studies.

ATTENTION MUNISING BASKETBALL FANS:
Here is the important information regarding the home Quadruple Header of games versus North Central Area Schools - Powers tomorrow (Friday, February 11th). It is also Varsity Parents' Night for both Girls and Boys. See Details Below:

This will occur at approximately 8:00pm. They will line up near the Girls Locker Room and take the floor together as announced. Flowers for the special mothers will be generously provided by the Munising Sports Boosters.

ATTENTION MUNISING WRESTLING FANS - TICKET PURCHASING INFORMATION FOR TEAM DISTRICTS TONIGHT AT BARK RIVER-HARRIS:
We apologize for the late dispersal of this information, but we received it late last night from the host school. Some people have reported ticket purchasing difficulty by searching from the main GoFan website (https://get.gofan.co/use-case/athletics) however, the QR code from the graphic below works very well with mobile phones. If you have questions, please contact the host school officials (Jeanne Lippens at jlippens@brhschools.org or Gerald Kleiman at gkleiman@brhschools.org). Go Mustangs!

MUSTANG NOTES & EVENTS - WEEK OF FEB. 7-11
SCHOOL COUNSELORS WEEK: This week is recognized nationally as School Counselors Week, so please remember to show your support and gratitude for all that Mr. Mattson and Ms. Carlson do. Their caring and hard work help to make Munising a great place to live and learn.
QUIZ BOWL TEAM: Congratulations to the Quiz Bowl Team and Coach Lynch for a great season and representing Munising well in the semifinal match against Sault Ste. Marie on Friday. This year's team advanced farther than any previous teams. We are sad to see our seniors go, but there is a strong nucleus of players returning next season.
COUNT DAY/ATTENDANCE REMINDERS: This Wednesday, February 9th is Spring Count Day and is a very important day for Munising Public Schools and all districts across the state as the number of enrolled and attending students determine the amount of annual funding a district will receive from the State of Michigan. It is critically important that students attend school daily and report to all classes each day. Also, students that are taking online courses must complete 2 two-way communications with their Teacher of Record. These communications are logged and are an important mechanism for pupil accounting of online learners. Improving K-12 student attendance rates in Munising is a priority and goal for the district as well as the newly formed Alger County Youth Services Task Force.
ELIGIBILITY CHECKS/ENTERING GRADES: Ms. Anderson will be recording and reporting academic eligibility for our student-athletes to our coaches by NOON TOMORROW. The eligibility report is run at noon every Monday to determine weekly eligibility for our student-athletes.
SPECIAL GAMES: On Thursday (2/10) the Hockey team will face the Marquette JV here in Munising at the Alger Centennial Ice Arena beginning at 6:30pm. This would be a great opportunity to watch our boys slap the puck. Also, this coming Friday (2/11) Munising will be hosting a quadruple header of basketball games against NCA. Preceded by two JV games, the Varsity match ups will be at 6:45pm (Girls) and 8:15pm (Boys). The Pep Band will play at both games and it will also be "Parents Night" at our Varsity games. This is a great opportunity to come out and support all of our basketball teams as you watch some great competition against a formidable foe.

SEEKING DONATIONS:
MUNISING HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDS "MICHIGAN YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT" CHAPTER; SENDING DELEGATION OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO THE CAPITOL IN LANSING.
On February 16th, we are sending a Munising Delegation of 26 high school students and 3 teacher advisors/chaperones (Mr. Burtis, and Mr. & Mrs. Lynch) to the YMCA Michigan Youth in Government (MYIG) Conference. This program is open to all middle and high school students from across the state who are interested in the political process, current issues, and government. With an active high school program in place, Mr. Burtis and Mr. Lynch are considering starting a middle school MYIG program next year (22-23).
This program provides students the opportunity to represent the Munising Public School District at the state level. These Mustangs will travel to Lansing for a 5-day 4-night conference. At the conference, the students will work with more than 600 students from all over the state, debating and discussing the most important topics of today. Students will also have the amazing opportunity to sit on the House and Senate floors of our Capitol and debate bills and proposals that they wrote with our own unique ideas. This program is a great opportunity to experience civic engagement, and provide experiential learning for students in both the legislative and executive branches of government.
Earlier this fall, Munising High School was awarded a $9,880.00 grant that covers transportation, hotel rooms, and the majority of student/school registration fees for the conference. HOWEVER, IT DOES NOT COVER MEAL COSTS. The estimated meal costs for this trip are $2465. We are asking for community support to help give our students a great opportunity to learn and practice civic engagement. Any donations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your continued support of the Munising Community!
Donations may be made by check (preferred) or cash. Please make checks payable to "Munising High School" and write "MYIG Meals" in the check memo line. Checks or cash may be dropped off in the office or mailed to:
Munising Middle-High School
810 State Hwy. M-28 West

Hello Munising Middle-High School Students and Parents/Guardians
COVID19 PROTOCOL CHANGES EFFECTIVE TOMORROW - JAN. 4
Students are no longer required to wear masks during school or while attending sporting and extracurricular events (this also pertains to spectators). However, please note that any staff member or student that would like to be tested may do so in the office.
In accordance with student survey results prior to the holiday break, we are going to dispense with the use of desks in the hallways for lunch seating to accommodate the student preference for sitting together in the cafeteria. We will be allowing the students to sit where they would like tomorrow and until further notice....HOWEVER, the seats that the students choose tomorrow WILL BE THEIR ASSIGNED SEATS FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT 6 WEEKS. Mrs. Essinger and the other Lunch Monitors will be diagramming the lunch room/tables and recording seating charts for 1st and 2nd lunch students. For contact tracing purposes, it is essential that students remain in their assigned seats.
Teachers will continue to keep seating charts for each class period and students must remain in assigned classroom seats.
Please note that until further notice, we will no longer be testing athletes weekly. We may reinstitute weekly testing for athletes if we see things start to spike with our student-athletes.

This is a reminder that optional COVID-19 testing for Munising Public Schools students and staff will be available in both school offices at the start of the day on Tuesday, January 4, 2022. Students and staff should go to the office before school starts if they want to get tested. Also, even though masks are not required in school, masks must still be worn on school buses and other school transportation. We will continue to work with the LMAS District Health Department to monitor any transmission of COVID-19 within the school setting and will change COVID-19 protocols as necessary.

A change in masking requirements and quarantine protocols will go into effect for Munising Public Schools students beginning January 4, 2022. Details have been posted on the Munising Public Schools Facebook page and website at munisingschools.com. Letters detailing the new protocols and consent to test forms are being mailed this week. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday season!

Munising Public Schools was made aware of a post late this afternoon that has been shared nationally this week on the social media platform TikTok. The post refers to a threat to school safety on Friday, December 17, 2021.
The post appears to be part of a national TikTok trend and did not originate in our school district. While we do not believe the threat to be credible, we will continue to monitor the situation. We are working with the Munising City Police and Alger County Sheriff Department in an effort to always keep our students, staff, and community safe. School will be conducted as a normal day tomorrow, and there will be an increased police presence in our school buildings.
The situation again serves as a good example of why it is important to avoid sharing posts online that refer to school safety threats. Even if they are not credible threats, they can cause a great deal of stress and anxiety for students, families and staff. We ask our families to take time to talk to your students about the influence of social media and the potential consequences of engaging in this type of behavior. We must take every threat seriously and students face the possibility of suspension or expulsion, and serious legal action for making threats.
We thank all of our students, families and staff for working together to ensure a safe, secure, and positive learning environment.

COMMON CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL LEARNERS AT MUNISING MIDDLE-HIGH SCHOOL:
Today the Teaching Staff at Munising MS/HS shared our new "Common Classroom Expectations for All Learners". The staff has worked together for several months to agree upon what is expected and craft the precise language to convey our expectations. These 8 expectations are currently laminated and posted throughout the building in all classrooms and other locations. This document provides a uniform vocabulary for students and staff and focuses on characteristics and actions that lead to success. Promoting expectations rather than rules helps build a positive culture by placing an emphasis on doing right versus avoiding wrong. Feel free to talk about these with your students at home. Go Stangs!

On Thursday, December 9, 2021 at approximately 10:30am, a hand-written threat was found in a bathroom at the Munising Middle/High School. The Munising City Police were contacted immediately and investigated the written threat. Both the Munising Middle/High School and Mather Elementary went into lockdown mode for the safety of the students and staff. In a separate incident, at approximately 11:00am, Munising Public Schools was notified of a threat in a video that a student had made. Munising City Police began a separate investigation into the video, resulting in a student being removed from school and released into the custody of a parent. A report will be filed with the Alger County Prosecutor office for possible charges. The hand-written threat was deemed to not be credible by school officials and the Munising City Police, but is still being investigated. As a precautionary measure, Munising City Police will remain on site at the Middle/High School for the remainder of the school day, with school safety protocols still in place.

ATTENTION PSAT & SAT TESTERS & PARENTS - GRAPHING CALCULATORS ARE VERY IMPORTANT:
For Fall Testing this Wednesday, October 13th (PSAT for 10th & 11th) and on October 28th (PSAT-9th & SAT 12th) it is recommended that student testers have a College Board approved graphing calculator. The approved models by brand are available at this link -https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-nmsqt-psat-10/taking-the-tests/test-day-checklist/approved-calculators. It may be difficult to borrow or buy a calculator in time for fall testing, but it is extremely important that students have a graphing calculator for PSAT & SAT testing in April. Although numerous brands/models are approved by the College Board, if you are going to purchase one for spring testing, we strongly recommend that you select the TI84+ CE. This calculator can be purchased from numerous vendors, but this link enables you to review it online - https://www.amazon.com/Texas-Instruments-TI-84-Graphing-Calculator/dp/B00TFYYWQA/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=ti84+plus+ce+calculator&qid=1633966672&sr=8-3
In addition to being a useful tool that helps students to earn higher scores on PSAT/SAT, a good graphing calculator is a great classroom tool in Algebra, Geometry, and Precalculus.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, on Monday, October 11, 2021, six bus routes will be combined into five bus routes in the morning. Normal pick up times may be later than usual. At the end of the day, two bus runs will be combined to take students home. All students who normally ride bus #2 will ride bus #10. Students may get home up to 30 minutes later than their usual time.

Wendy Zdeb, the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) Executive Director paid a visit to Munising Middle-High School yesterday (10/7) for a tour of the facilities and to learn about educational needs, priorities, and culture in our school district. Wendy met with Mr. Travis, Mr. Kelto, and numerous teachers. Wendy is a former teacher, assistant principal, athletic director, and principal. She is a champion for education and now serves at the head of the main professional organization serving secondary principals and schools with counsel on legislative, legal, and educational advancement issues as well as providing a strong lobbying voice in Lansing and nationally for public education. Thanks to Wendy for her interest in and support of public education in the Upper Peninsula. Based on her tweet, it is apparent that she was as impressed by the view from our school as she was by the views shared within the school. Please visit again!

Munising High School Social Studies Project
Students in Mr. Lynch's World History classes have been working all week on a project entitled, "History of Me". This relevant learning opportunity affords students the chance to learn about history and ancestry in a personal context. In the pictures below various students in periods 3 & 7 share their projects with classmates. Projects by Elizabeth Wing, Toni Briggs, and others were especially impressive.

Thank you to Mrs. Cromell & the Munising Public Library for bringing Jeff Kass a teacher, poet, and author to share his book of poetry with the Munising High School English students on Monday, September 20th. His poetry revolves around his experiences as a teacher and a moonlighting pizza deliveryman.

From Saturday, September 18th through Wednesday, September 22nd, one school employee, and several Mather Elementary and Munising Middle School students tested positive for COVID-19. Parents of students determined to be close contacts have already been contacted by the school to get approval to administer COVID testing for students that will remain in school.
Due to possible delays in the school being notified by the health department, we ask parents of students tested outside of school to please contact the school office immediately if your child has tested positive for COVID-19. If testing results were received outside of school hours, please call the school office and leave a voicemail.

Over the past few days, several Munising High School students tested positive for COVID-19. Due to delays in parents being contacted by the LMAS District Health Department because of the COVID case volume in their coverage area, school personnel will initially contact parents of students determined to be close contacts in school. Parents of recent close contacts have already been contacted by the school, and those parents will also receive a call from LMAS. An LMAS case investigator will also contact parents of the COVID positive student as soon as possible to determine if there were any close contacts outside of school.
Due to Munising Public Schools doing universal masking, the new Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Quarantine Guidance allows the students determined to be close contacts to continue attending school, providing they are symptom free and test negative for COVID-19 for seven days after contact with the COVID positive student. This only pertains to students identified as close contacts in school. Munising school personnel will administer the COVID tests at the beginning of each school day.
We thank our students, staff and parents for their patience and understanding in yet another challenging school year.
