Dear Parents and Community Members:
We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2019-20 educational progress for the Munising Middle/High School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. For the 2019-20 school year, schools were identified using definitions and labels as required in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). A Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) school is one that has at least one underperforming student subgroup. An Additional Targeted Support (ATS) school is one that has a student subgroup performing at the same level as the lowest 5% of all schools in the state. A Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) school is one whose performance is in the lowest 5% of all schools in the state or has a graduation rate at or below 67%. Some schools are not identified with any of these labels. In these cases, no label is given.
Munising Middle/High School was not identified with any of the above labels.
One of the key challenges our school is committed to continuing to improve, is to increase the amount of students that are proficient on the M-Step in all of our subgroups. In an effort to help achieve this, we continue to support a second block of math class each day for students that were not proficient on the previous year’s M-Step test. We also continue to utilize our Peer-to-Peer program that matches an upperclassman with a student with special needs on a daily basis. In addition we continue to do NWEA testing three times per school year to help identify areas where our students can improve academically.
State law requires that we also report additional information.
Students are assigned to Munising Middle/High School based on their grade level. All students in grades 6 through 12 attend the Munising Middle/High School.
The School Improvement Plan is monitored annually. The School Improvement Team meets monthly throughout the school year.
Munising Public Schools has no specialized schools in the district.
Munising Middle/High School uses the core curriculum developed by the Michigan Department of Education. A combination of Common Core, Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs), and High School Content Expectations (HSCEs) is used to cover the Michigan Merit Curriculum. The entire curriculum, including the Michigan Merit Curriculum, can be accessed at the Michigan Department of Education website at www.michigan.gov/mde/.
All aggregate student achievement results for nationally normed achievement tests are included in the AER data that there is a link to in the second paragraph of the cover letter.
During the 2018-2019 school year, 125 students had a parent or guardian attend Parent-Teacher Conferences. This represented 35% of the student body. During the 2019-2020 school year, 84 students had a parent or guardian attend Parent-Teacher Conferences. This represented 24% of the student body. The numbers were down significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The following is also part of our report:
1. Munising Middle/High School had 33 dual enrollment/concurrent enrollment students, 16% of our student body, during the 2018-2019 school year, and 30 dual enrollment/concurrent enrollment students, 16% of our student body, during the 2019-2020 school year.
2. During the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years, Munising Middle/High School offered one college equivalent course, Honors English, where students earned concurrent credit through St. Norbert College.
3. During the 2018-2019 school year, 22 students were enrolled in a college equivalent course, which represented 11% of our student body. During the 2019-2020 school year, 15 students were enrolled in a college equivalent course, which represented 8% of our student body.
4. During the 2018-2019 school year, 22 students earned college credit in a college equivalent course. This represented 100% of the students enrolled in the course. During the 2019-2020 school year, 15 students earned credit in a college equivalent course. This represented 100% of the students enrolled in the course.
