MUNISING PUBLIC SCHOOLS ANNOUNCES ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES

At its Tuesday, February 15 board meeting, the Munising Board of Education approved the hiring of Mike Travis as the next Munising Public Schools’ Superintendent and also approved moving Nicole Lasak to the Munising Middle/High School Principal and Athletic Director position.  Both changes will become effective July 1, 2022.  Pete Kelto, the current Munising Public Schools Superintendent, will be retiring at the end of June 2022.

Mike Travis earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education from Ferris State University in 1996 and a Masters Degree in Career & Technical Education in 2000, also from Ferris State. He has 26 years of experience in education, including 22 years as a principal.  He started his educational career as a teacher at Cheboygan High School before moving into administrative positions as an Assistant Principal at Mt. Pleasant High School, and as a Principal at Lakeview High School and Elk Rapids High School.  Mr. Travis was hired as the Munising Middle/High School Principal and Athletic Director in July 2021.  Mike and his wife Jennifer have two children. Olivia is a junior at Ferris State University, and Mason is a senior at Elk Rapids High School.

Nicole Lasak earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 2005, her Teaching Certification in Secondary Education in 2008, and her Masters Degree in Educational Administration in 2017, all from Northern Michigan University.  Mrs. Lasak was a Competitive Cheer Coach and Athletic Department Secretary for Munising Public Schools before being hired as a Secondary Education Science Teacher at the Munising Middle/High School in 2010.  She was hired as the Mather Elementary Principal and State and Federal Programs Coordinator in July of 2021. Nicole and her husband Joe have two children.  Jackson is a 4th grade student, and Hadley is in kindergarten.
