As many of you are aware, today Governor Gretchen Whitmer recommended, not required, that high school students move to remote learning for the next two weeks, and also recommended, not required, that youth sports suspend in-person activities (practices and games) for the next two weeks. The recommendation also stated that schools should make decisions based on input from their local health departments. The superintendents of all Marquette and Alger County schools met with their local health departments today and have made the decision to remain in school and continue in-person instruction, and to continue athletics with the required precautions. In Munising Public Schools, we’ve only had one student test positive for COVID-19 since February 3rd, and all spring sports athletes are now tested for COVID-19 on a weekly basis. Based on data from the health departments, while hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are rising slightly, overall rates in Upper Peninsula hospitals remain low. Thank you to our students, staff and parents for continuing to be diligent in wearing masks, staying home when sick, and taking the necessary precautions to keep everyone safe. We will continue to meet with our local health departments and follow their recommendations for possible closure if student and staff cases begin to increase.

The COVID-19 drive-thru testing will be held in the Munising Middle-High School parking lot on Monday, April 5, 2021 from noon until 6:00pm. The testing will help provide as safe an environment as possible for students returning to school and for community members. Those who wish to be tested are strongly encouraged to fill out a pre-registration form for each person who wants to be tested. The pre-registration forms can be found online at http://honumg.info/MunisingMHS or by scanning the QR code on the event flyer on the Munising Public Schools Facebook page or website. You will also be able to register when you get tested. Once a rapid test has been completed, the individual will receive results by phone, text or email within approximately 15-30 minutes. If your rapid test is positive, you can come back to the same site to get a PCR (comprehensive COVID-19 test), which typically gives results within 48-72 hours. If you cannot return due to time constraints, you may schedule a PCR test with a different provider. The site will also be open to all Alger County community members. It is recommended that those within the school district sign up as soon as possible.
